Forests regulate water flows, support agriculture, provide timber and non-timber products, and offer opportunities for tourism and recreation. Coral reefs sustain fisheries and protect coastlines. Losing these ecosystems would be an ecological and humanitarian catastrophe.

To prevent that outcome, conservation action must be scaled up dramatically. Governments in the region need to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws, expand and properly fund protected area networks, and integrate biodiversity into development planning. International funding mechanisms should prioritize the most threatened hotspots, especially those with high endemism and low remaining habitat. Private sector actors must commit to deforestation-free supply chains and invest in restoration. And local communities must be empowered as equal partners in conservation.

The Indo-Malayan Biome still harbors remarkable species that have not yet been discovered, and many more that can be saved if we act now with urgency and wisdom.
